In ancient Rome, people believed, that the purple amethyst could protect its owner from the effects of alcohol. The name “Amethyst“ comes from the Greek “a-methy-stos“ which translates to “one that does not get drunk“. This association probably came up because the color of red wine can be similar to that of an amethyst.
